Where is the boundary?

The bridge was a good marker for the boundary in the past. However, we see that the rest of the community on the Ashmore Road side of the bridge enthusiastically embraces this initiative. We have included the streets on this side in patrols. Here is a map of the area patrolled:

What is the security fund?

Benowa Waters Residents Association is a separate incorporated association set up to fund security initiatives in the neighbourhood. Its goal is to increase security and eliminate crime in the neighbourhood.

Contributions from residents fund this.

What options have been considered to improve security?

We have considered many options besides the current Gold Coast K9 security team. These have included suggestions made by residents on the Facebook channel and in community conversations. For some of the feedback, you can see recent survey results, which outline what the community is thinking.

Will we be able to have a gate at the bridge?

The short answer is that it’s not likely. Other communities with a gate were set up like that from the plan. There are instances where a community has been able to change; however, every homeowner must agree. Even so, the committee is looking into this as a possible long-term option, however unlikely.

Boom gates on the bridge would mean we are a gated estate. It would cost $400k to start the process then we would require a levy for operating costs. From our advice, no estate on the Gold Coast has managed to become a private estate post the initial build. Additionally, every property owner would need to agree, which is unlikely.

This solution would also mean separating Benowa Waters into two areas at the bridge. Many people from the Ashmore Road side of the community contribute and security currently patrols there.

What about a static security guard at the bridge?

A security guard is not allowed to stop and check cars coming into the estate unless we were officially a private estate. A private security guard can patrol the streets and alert the police. The mere presence of patrols, CCTV, and signage is a good deterrent!

Will cameras stop the criminals?

The concern has been that criminals continue to do what they do despite cameras around the neighbourhood. It’s also clear that the criminals are switching license plates, so can’t be identified.

While this is the case when looking back at the footage, cameras help because most security companies will request a camera somewhere to reference.

Visible CCTV (operating and dummy), as well as signage, is a deterrent. Signs that look like the Gold Coast City Council and police monitored signs apparently have an immediate effect. Thieves are less likely to target these areas if they believe it is hooked up to the Council or Police monitoring systems.

What about security patrols?

The current security patrol operated by the Gold Coast K9 team has been very effective, and we are keen to continue this operation. However, to do this, we need funding, which is why we ask for community donations.

What’s the Neighbourhood Watch Group program?

The Neighbourhood Watch Scheme is run in tandem with the Police and provides solutions to support communities to improve security in their area. The Committee is currently in discussions with the relevant authorities; however, this can not continue without coordination.

What is the WhatsApp group for?

This has been set up to report suspicious activity in real-time. It isn’t for discussion (use Facebook). The rules of what can and can’t be posted in the WhatsApp group are on the group’s info page. The Residents Association does not manage the WhatsApp group.

How do I get on the WhatsApp group?

Send the administrators of the WhatsApp group your phone number with proof of your residential address, and they will add you. Alternatively, please fill in this form.

What is the Facebook Page For?

The Benowa Waters Residents Group is a private group for residents of Benowa Waters only.  It is for residents to seek recommendations, announce community events, buy/swap/sell, lost & found, missing pets or anything relevant to our Benowa Waters Community.

The Residents Association does not manage the Facebook Page.

Can I promote my business on the Facebook Page?

Report it to the police immediately.

You can share it on WhatsApp to alert your neighbours if there is an immediate need for concern to the community.
